2011 Marathons in Asia and Australia

Looking for marathons to run in Asia and Australia this year and beyond? Wanting to know which Asian country is the most marathon-friendly? Which months are marathon-busiest? Where multiple marathons can be run in a short period of time for Marathon Maniacs wannabes?

Look no further. I have asked the very same questions before and was a bit disappointed that I had to integrate data from several marathon calendars to get the answers I needed. Also, none was a one-stop-shop for marathons in Asia and Australia- where close family members reside. So I made up a list, to help others and  myself. A disclaimer though- half marathons and shorter races as well as ultramarathons and trail running events are excluded. The last two types of races in the region will be covered in a separate post at some time in the future.

In summary, there will be 184 marathons or 42.195-kilometer (26.2-mile) to 45K races in Asia and Australia during 2011, if all those held in 2010 will also push thru this year. South Korea and Japan lead Asian countries outside of Australia in the number of marathons to be hosted, followed by India, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia, all with at least six marathons each. January is the busiest month followed by February and April while September is the leanest, marathon-wise. At least eight countries provide a path leading directly to the door of the Marathon Maniacs, the world's largest marathoners' club, by running multiple marathons just locally, without ever using a passport.
